“Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper."

Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century.  I am not sure when in his lifetime this was expressed, early or late.  It clearly shows that Dr. Einstein had thoughts that went well beyond the scientific realm.  His expression appears to be an interweaving of science and theology.  If it were possible, he could probably explain quite eloquently exactly what he meant with this.  Since that is not possible now, we have to read it as quoted and attempt to understand for ourselves what he was thinking at the time.

It is obvious that we have no control over the physical and atmospheric forces in life.  We certainly have no say in our birth, do not have absolute control over our physical health, and most of us will not control our end.  There are many things in between birth and death that we do control however, and are the result of our decisions and self-chosen path in life.  Perhaps Dr. Einstein believed that even these things were not in our control, but instead were directed by an omnipotent distant force which he expressed as the “invisible piper”.

Clearly we have the power to choose many things.  We make decisions everyday, some are trivial matters and some are important that set a course for future events, and some even have everlasting consequences.

I do agree that there is indeed an omnipotent force that is in control of the universe.  That force is God himself.  However, while it may appear that He is distant to us, He is not distant at all.  He is there for us to reach out to at any moment.  He has given us that decision to make, to reach out to him and to begin to know him, or not.  We are absolutely in control of that decision.  It is THE most important decision we will ever make.

If you have never made the decision to reach out to him, why not?  Leave behind the forces in life that are keeping you from it.  He is there, not far away, just waiting to hear from you.

See you at the ramp.
